What a Surge Protector Does

One of the standard devices that will most likely benefit from the use of a surge protector would be a personal computer. Surge protectors are devices that are used to suppress sudden surges of electricity to your electronic devices. It is important to protect these electronic devices from power surges because of the damage that a surge in power can cause to electronic hardware. In the case of a personal computer, a sudden surge in power could cause serious damage to the hard drive on your computer which could cause a loss of information on your computer.

To understand the damage that a sudden surge of power can cause you must first understand what a power surge is. Simply stated, A power surge, or transient voltage, is an increase in voltage significantly above the designated level in a flow of electricity. In normal household and office wiring in the United States, the standard voltage is 120 volts. If the voltage rises above 120 volts, there is a problem, and a surge protector helps to prevent that problem from destroying your computer.

To further understand the meaning of a power surge it would be helpful to know the term "voltage". Voltage is a measure of a difference in electric potential energy. Electric current travels from point to point because there is a greater electric potential energy on one end of the wire than there is on the other end.

A good analogy to explain a power surge further would be to referrence a water hose that is getting too much water pressure through the hose. When there is too much water pressure the hose will burst. The same kind of thing can happen with electricity. The added spike in power can cause your electrical wiring to burst as well. Much like the water hose, if the added pressure does not actually destroy the wiring (causing it to overheat) it can almost surely cause an added strain on the system components that will cause increased wearing of these components over time.

A surge protector will regulate the flow of power that is going through your wiring. This will help to eliminate any spikes that may occur. Surge protectors are an essential item that can be used to drastically cut down on the wear and tear of your electronic items, which can help to increase the life of your household electronics.
