The Most Essential Surge Protection Features to Use

A surge protector is an essential tool to use in the home. A sure protector will help to keep dangerous electrical surges from happening in the home. However, the best protectors will need to have some of the most essential sure protector features. These include a good joule rating, a proper clamping voltage rating, response time and fuse protection among other things. Proper testing standards should be featured as well.

First, it is essential for surge protection to find something that has a good joule rating. When the joule rating is higher then the protector will be able to handle higher levels of surges. This rating comes from the amount of joules that can be handled in a short period of time. 600 is considered to be the best rating that is available for surge protection, but the main thing to consider is that the product is able to handle as many joules as possible.

Next, the clamping voltage rating should be considered for surge protection. This rating refers to the ability of the surge protector to lower the voltage of a power surge. When t he clamping voltage rating is lower then that means the product can reduce the level of voltage in any power surges that may take place. In most cases a protector will have a rating of 330 volts, but it helps to look for ones that are lower than that.

Fuse protection is essential too. A device with thermal fuse protection is strongly recommended here. That is because this works to help with reducing heat levels from fuses, which in turn can will help to reduce the strength of any surges that take place.

The response time should be looked into also for surge protection. A good protector will have a response time of less than five nanoseconds. When the number of nanoseconds is lower then the protector will be able to respond to a surge at a faster rate.

The last part of a surge protection to watch for is the testing standards. All surge protections should have UL 1449 Second Edition testing labels on them. This means that the protection has passed independent OSHA approved testing for safety and performance. Underwriters Laboratories has worked for years to help with testing materials for safety, so it helps to look to see that the product being used has this approval from UL.

Those are all essential parts of a surge protector to look for when finding one. These surge protection features include important ratings and details on its ability to handle surges and respond to them on time. A good protector should also have the appropriate listing for protection on it as well. By using these considerations the appropriate surge protector can be found for the home.
